Joy looked at her boyfriend Reg. He looked like he was on glue. His eyes were all red, and his breath was fevered. Joy rolled her eyes; she had to pick up a date who was on drugs! No one in her circle were on drugs, and it was an embarrassment that he was.

“So what do you want to do now?” asked Joy as she rolled her eyes.

“I don't know; what do you want to do?” asked Reg as he glared at her.

“I want to go home;” told Joy as she tried to hide her disappoint.

“To your room?” asked Reg as he began to smile.

“No just me;” told Joy. “I want out of this date;” she added.

“Oh;” muttered Reg as he hung his head a little. “May I ask why?” he asked.

“You are on something;” told Joy as she narrowed her eyes.

“No I am not;” told Reg as he drew back.

“Oh yea? What is with the red eyes?” asked Joy as she leered.

“I just didn't sleep well;” told Reg as he grew some congestion.

“Take me home;” told Joy as she began to feel her skin crawl. “I want to go home;” she added.

“Okay;” told Reg as he shrugged. “I will take you home;” he said.

“Good;” added Joy with a nod before she narrowed her eyes at the road.

Reg rubbed his eyes as he sat there in the car. He didn't feel like driving, however he couldn't ask Joy to walk home - they were too far along the highway. Reg narrowed his eyes, he wanted to go to sleep however Joy stared at him in an out of fashion way and he knew if he argued that she might scream.

“I am going to take you home;” told Reg before he fingered the car keys.

He didn't want to drive. In fact he wanted to call his dad and tell him the car broke down. He didn't want to drive Joy home, nor did he want to drive himself home. He wanted to crash, he wanted to close his eyes and sleep; however with Joy as his bystander he knew he had to be responsible.

“Here we go;” he muttered before he started the car.

Joy glared out the window. There were many cars and she wished she were in every one of them. She hated feeling as though she were in a trap, and she was; her boyfriend Reg had done glue and she felt let down. The world of sour crusted her heart and Joy continued to feel bad. She didn't know what to say and Reg wasn't even good at cracking ice.

The drive home was quiet, and when Reg stopped Joy had tears in her eyes.

“I am going to go inside of my house;” she told Reg as she opened the door. “Let us not see each other again;” she added.

“Why?” asked Reg as he narrowed his eyes. “Was the date that bad?” he questioned.

“It was the worst;” gasped Joy before she closed the door and walked inside.

Joy wiped her tears away at the front door. She then put in a smile and walked inside. Joy glared at her brother Sean as he stood by the telephone. He glared at Joy and laughed. Joy didn't want to hear his laughter and so she moved to go to her bedroom. Sean almost tripped her on the way, and Joy grew angry.

“Back off!” she cried. “This is not a good day;” she added.

“Why should I back off?” asked Sean before he stepped forward and kicked her leg.

Joy fell onto the carpet and she swore out loud.

“I hate you!” she steamed. “I had the worst of days;” she added.

“Why is that?” asked Sean as he leered at Joy. “Skirt too long?” he asked.

“No!” gasped Joy before she lifted herself off the floor. “The date was stoned;” she said.

“So what? Stoned is there to make a person look good;” told Sean as he watched Joy as she picked herself off the floor.

“No it is not!” gasped Joy.

“I am glad you agree;” said Sean as he smiled. “Otherwise you would be kicked out of this house;” he whispered.

“Obviously you are not going to see this boy again;” interrupted another voice which was Joy's father Greg.

“No!” gasped Joy as she noticed his shadow as it lingered on the wall. “I don't want to date anybody at the moment;” she added. “I dumped Reg and that is all there is to it;” she said.

“Good;” told Greg as he narrowed his eyes. “Because you are worth more then any drug;” he added.

“You are worth soil;” told Sean as he smiled and leaned against the mantle.

“You are worth gold which is the precious form of soil;” corrected Greg as he began to see the humour in Sean's taunting eyes. “Gold is a natural form, and so are you;” he added before he left.

Joy smiled a little as she revolved the words around her mind. Sean saw the smile and he stepped forward.

“That means you are ugly;” he muttered in a quiet tone. “Soil is still what it is dirt in any form;” he added before he winked and walked away.

Joy shrugged. She had nothing more to say, and so she moved to her room and packed her purse away.

Joy lounged on a chair and began to brood. She hated Sean, he was off humoured and silly! Still it was probably true, she was probably just nothing - but she wasn't going to get upset about it. She had dumped Reg and was going to move on. Life was never going to be about sitting near anyone stoned ever again. She deserved better then that, and she felt strong for her movement. She would never see a drugged up boy again, she would only see a man, and then life would be perfect.
